The alarm did not ring

Open the app, hold a finger on the clock and choose Board ▾ > Alarms at the top. Then open More options (⋮) > Alarm check. It reads the phone's settings live and lists what could silence or hide an alarm: notifications, the full-screen alarm, exact alarms, Do Not Disturb and the alarm volume. Each item has a button that opens the right setting. Finish with a test alarm.

If the phone was switched off at the alarm time, the app tells you in a notification once it is on again. An alarm nobody stops rings for 10 minutes, then stops and leaves a notification.

My phone puts apps to sleep

Some phone makers add their own battery saving that stops apps in the background. An alarm clock has to be left out of it. The app cannot see or change this setting, so the Alarm check only points here.

After changing the setting, run a test alarm to be sure (see Test alarm).

Samsung

Samsung phones can put apps to sleep, for example with Put unused apps to sleep: "If you haven't used an app in a while, it will automatically be put to sleep" (Samsung support). To keep Fold Table Clock awake:

  1. Open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits.
  2. Open Never sleeping apps, tap + and add Fold Table Clock.
  3. Check that it is not in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps.

Notifications

The screen that stops a ringing alarm comes through a notification. Without notifications the alarm sounds, but no screen appears to stop it. On Android 13 and later the app asks when you save an alarm; if you said no, Alarm check > Allow fixes it.

The same happens if the phone's settings silence the app's "Ringing alarm" notifications or turn their importance down. The Alarm check shows that too.

Full-screen alarm

From Android 14 you can take away an app's right to fill the lock screen. Without it only a banner appears at the top of the lock screen when the alarm rings. Alarm check > Allow opens the setting.

Exact alarms

On Android 12 exact alarms can be switched off for an app. Without them an alarm may not ring on time, or may only show a notification; the Alarm check then shows the step. From Android 13 an alarm clock holds exact alarms for good, and Android 10 and 11 have nothing to set.

Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb can be set to silence alarms too. While it does, the Alarm check and the Alarms page say so, and Fix opens the Do Not Disturb settings, where you allow alarms.

Alarm volume

The alarm rings at the phone's alarm volume, not the ringtone or media volume. When that volume is at zero, the alarm still rings at a quarter, and the app warns you; Turn up raises it to 60 %. Each alarm can also start quietly and rise (Settings > Alarm ringing > Volume rise).

Test alarm

In Alarms, open More options (⋮) > Test in 1 minute, or run the test from the Alarm check. A minute later an alarm rings over the clock. Stop or snooze it, and you know alarms work on this phone. If a notice about viewing full screen appears, confirm it then, so it does not pop up at night.

Can the clock start by itself?

Android does not let an app open itself from the background, so for now you open the clock yourself. It then stays on the screen, also over the lock screen, for as long as the screen mode keeps the screen on (Settings > Screen and battery > When the screen shows the time).

Foldable in tent posture

Stand a foldable like a tent and the cover screen shows the time in landscape, whatever the rotation lock says. Any Android phone on a stand works too. While an alarm rings on the cover screen, opening the foldable stops it.

Night

At night the clock turns deep red or amber (Settings > Night > Night colour). The backlight goes to its lowest and the time is drawn at full strength on it; Brightness at night makes it dimmer if you like.

It is night when the room goes dark. A phone without a light sensor uses the night hours instead, 22:30 to 6:30 unless you change them (Settings > Night > Night hours).

When the screen is dark, a tap, a double knock on the table, a wave of the hand or the room light coming on shows the time (Settings > Night > What wakes a dark screen). Before an alarm, while the clock is on screen, it can slowly glow from deep red through orange to warm white (Settings > Alarm ringing > Dawn before the alarm).

Changing how the clock looks

Hold a finger on the clock. It gets an outline and a bar appears at the top:

  • Done ends the editing.
  • Day and Night show how the clock looks by day and at night.
  • Board ▾ is the menu of the whole app: Alarms, Settings, Help and contact, About the app.

Tap the clock to choose the face (neon, red LED, analogue, minimal, modular, calendar or your photos), its colour and style, what shows under the time, the glow and the brightness. Changes apply straight away.

Battery overnight

The screen mode decides how long the screen stays on (Settings > Screen and battery > When the screen shows the time):

  • Always on: the time stays visible; at night it only dims and takes the night colour.
  • Wake on motion: the screen stays black until you tap it, knock on the table, wave a hand or switch on a light.
  • By room light (the default): visible while the room is lit; in the dark, black and waiting for motion.
  • By schedule: black and waiting for motion during the night hours, visible outside them.
  • Like the system: the screen turns off after the phone's usual timeout. Lowest battery use.

With Save battery when unplugged (on by default), Always on waits for motion without a charger, and below 15 % battery the screen follows the system timeout. For a whole night with the screen on, put the phone on its charger.

Screen burn-in

The whole picture drifts slowly back and forth a little, so the same pixels do not stay lit all night. At night the clock lights only a small part of the screen.

Your own alarm tones

Each alarm can ring with a tone from the phone or a file of your own, up to 20 MB (Alarms > the alarm > Ringing, or for all alarms Settings > Alarm ringing). The app keeps a copy in the part of its storage that Android opens before the first unlock, so the alarm can play it even after a night-time restart, before you enter your PIN. When no alarm uses the tone any more, the app deletes the copy. If the tone cannot play, the phone's alarm sound rings instead.

Backup and a new phone

If backup is turned on in your phone's settings, Android may include the app's alarms and settings in your device backup in your Google account. The copies of chosen photos and tones are left out of it; they move only with a direct transfer from your old phone to a new one.
